Google Chrome [Beta] for Mac

chrome

Honestly? For a geek like me, yes! I really have enjoyed the last couple days of playing with Chrome for Mac. I do find myself bouncing back to Safari and Firefox for some frequent tasks but all in all, I find the new browser very satisfying. Here’s the list off the top of my head:

PROS

  • I like the speed increases
  • I love how they integrated search into the address bar
  • It seems a lot lighter weight on the OS to me
  • Love the bookmark & password management
  • I dig the “one click to highlight” address bar
  • I like the favicons in the bookmark bar
  • Love the intelligent history/google search address bar dropdown
  • Dig the incognito window/function
  • Love the minimal footprint (more website on the screen)

CONS

  • I miss my OpenDNS Shortcuts (is there a fix?)
  • I miss Delicious (a lot)
  • I miss drag and drop URL’s
  • I miss the RSS icon
  • Hate that the “X” is on the right side of the tabs
  • Miss the drag and drop image preview (helpful when looking for transparent background images)

All in all however, I really appreciate the new browser and can’t wait until they open up the extensions to us Mac users. I think those will help a whole lot (rumored to be tomorrow BTW). For now, I’m a Chrome user and think I can wait a “little” bit for some of my lesser needed items to be incorporated. Way to go Google, I’m impressed once again! Bring on the awesome!

Well… That’s what I think anyway. What do you think?

I've been using Google Chrome on Windows for several months now and have moved to it almost exclusively for the past month and a half. I need IE for some work tasks - mainly a work content management system. Also, for some reason my bank website does not render in Chrome. It hangs when I try to login. But I find the speed of Chrome to be a real winner against my previous browser (Firefox). Now that "Iboughtamac" (A Macbook Air on Ebay) I'm glad to read that Chrome is available for Mac and will likely use the browser on my MBA rather than Safari. Thanks for your great videos and posts. This is my first Mac so I'll be watching and reading as I dive into my MBA.
  • Kevin, Great tip! I didn't know about that. Yep, they work for me too. nice! Scratch that one off the list :)
  • As for the OpenDNS shortcuts they work for me if I put a forward slash after the shortcut.

Yep, until extensions work on mac I really won't use Chrome much. Safari runs pretty bad for me, ironic huh? Safari doesn't work right on a Mac :) But for now I will keep using Firefox and Safari, but when the extensions work, bye bye Safari and hello Chrome.
