Skitch: Your Little Capture Buddy

It’s a drawing pad! It’s a web service! It’s a screen capture app! It’s Skitch! The latest from Plasq, Skitch is a easy-to-use screen capture, drawing, and sharing app. It’s powerful, and a favorite to many mac users. When you open skitch, you can either take a screen shot, a picture via webcam, or simply draw to your heart’s content. Then, you’re able to easily share it to your favorite web services, email it, drag it to your hard drive, or even use the Skitch web service.
One aspect to using Skitch is the screen-capturing function. While you can take screenshots by using the built-in keyboard shortcuts on Mac OS X, skitch offers much more. Once you’ve selected what you want on your screen, you can then proceed to highlight certain areas by drawing on top of the image, or just start typing to generate text over your capture.  This same mentality applies to taking pictures via the webcam.

Perhaps the best thing about skitch is its user interface. The application is one window, with the different functions arranged around the side – nothing special about that. You can open up this window by either clicking a dock icon, or the menubar icon depending on your preferences. To create text, you just have to start typing, to draw you just drag your mouse across the screen – simple as that. At the bottom of the screen is a space to name your drawing, and then a drag me tab. Using this tab allows you to drop your image somewhere on your computer, into an email message, a document, or wherever you’d like it! Next to the drag me tab is a web post button, so that all you have to do is click that button to upload your image to the skitch web service, flickr, .Mac, or even upload via FTP.

Skitch is an app that I love, and personally can’t wait to see where it goes. You’ll never know when you might run into a situation in which skitch comes in handy, so register for and download the open beta from Plasq today!
