Switching Our Comments to … “Disqus”

disqus.jpg

Several months ago, I was introduced to Disqus and after quite a bit of delay and some really busy months, I have finally made the switch. Their comment system, in my opinion is absolutely awesome! So much so that I have just switched the entire iBAM comment system over to theirs. Now here’s how it works. All posts with previous comments will remain as they were. Any posts with no comments will switch to the Disqus system and all new posts will be set to their system as well.

You can access our comment threads directly by going here: http://iboughtamac.disqus.com

Here’s where you come in… As this is and has always been more of a community, I want you guys to help me evaluate the new system and let me know what you think. Try making some comments and we’ll see what happens. You be the judge! What’s your take on Disqus.com and their comment system?

Let’s Discuss Disqus…

  • The disqus sign-up page had no link for any kind of TOS or Privacy Policy - nor could I quickly find one on their site. I don't like that. What are their plans for my email address? I signed up anyway because I doubt you'd steer me into some kind of mess, but I hope they adapt their service.

I am very interested. I have everything ready, and would very much appreciate it.Thanks a lot for sharing........
  • Was a good read. I'll be back for more.

As individuals I think by learning something new it expands and improves who and what we are. Everyone should keep learning and never stop.
  • Thanks gauvins.

We've confirmed that this is a problem on coComment's end.
  • Removing the coComment add-on in Firefox solves the "problem"
  • I experience the same behavior (a dialog box titled Update extracted parameters")

this behavior is browser-dependent. If I use IE/XP, no problem. If I use firefox/XP or leopard, it shows. Firefox also runs adblock and coComment.
  • We'll have a way to delete your own account soon. In the meantime, we can do this for you if you send us an email.

    1) What makes you so frustrated?
    2) Where do you see that dialog about "Update extracted parameters"?
  • Woaw, looks a little different than the old wordpress comments system. Hopes it works out well, well, after all. we'll be the ones using it. :)
  • UGH! Disqus provides no way to delete an account? No likey! I'm sure it's a very nice service to blog owners/moderaters. But for average joe schmo user, I gotta say so far Disqus sucks. Especially the inexplicable "Update extracted parameters" dialog and the fact that they won't let you change your mind about having an account but don't disclose that when you sign up on an innocuous form because you trust the owner of a web site you're commenting on. Ugh! Ugh! Ugh!
  • FYI, the comment as written here is missing some sentences from what I originally wrote. But I don't have time to redo, so those extra bits of feedback that would probably have been useful to Disqus are now lost.

Please let me amend one thing. Disqus keeps giving me an "update extracted parameters" dialog when I try to submit my post, but it's totally unclear WHY. The names they give to its form fields are far from self-explanatory. So I take back my comment about it being worth a little bit of extra pain (it's supposed to say "to your users" after that).

I find posting a comment via Disqus confusing and more of a pain. I'm less likely to bother posting a comment here now. You know I love you. But I don't love this thing - it's in my way.
  • So far, looks like making the comment is relatively easy. But also they add weird line breaks to your blog page.

As a user, I don't enjoy seeing that I'm "unverified" with no info or tool tip that tells me what that means. When I went from your comment form to sign up and then came back, it blew away what I had already written and I had to start over - that would suck if I had written a lot. The disqus sign-up page had no link for any kind of TOS or Privacy Policy - nor could I quickly find one on their site. I don't like that. What are their plans for my email address? I signed up anyway because I doubt you'd steer me into some kind of mess, but I hope they adapt their service. Some users DO care what those documents say.

So far I'm ambivalent. If this keeps comment spam off your site, then I think it's probably worth a little bit of extra pain.

I'm curious about whether Disqus keeps your comments exclusively until you export them, or whether they also go into your WordPress database.
  • Thanks man... sorry it took me so long to switch over. I know we were talking quite a while ago. Sometimes I really suck! :)

What kind of customizations? I see SMS is coming soon! Sign me up for beta of anything you want feedback for. The iBAM community is pretty good at voicing their opinion so I can promise we'll do our best!

Thanks for hanging in there for me!

    Talk soon!
