Apple’s Latest Update

Brent was looking for a few guest bloggers the other day, So “threw my hand up” and volunteered. My name is Ted Byars, I’m from Ft Worth, Tx and a total mac geek. I recently upgraded to the latest OS X release 10.4.10. At first I really didn’t notice any obvious problems. Apple’s site says this update “includes general operating system fixes” and some compatibilty issues. Well, a few days later I was shutting my machine down and I got apple’s version of the “blue screen” of death. I was to say the least…..shocked and a little miffed.

A few days ago I installed the latest itunes/quicktime update. Did anyone else experience a little slow down of their system? Mine sorta did for a few minutes. Not very long after it was installed, again……I had another kernel panic. Again….miffed but confused. What gives? Is our beloved apple falling down on the job? A buddy of mine just bought a brand spankin’ new 15″ MBP, glossy screen…drool. I asked him how it was going and if he was enjoying his new machine. It wasn’t, He also encountered said kernel panic just fresh out of the box. He was not amused. He spent a good portion of his day on the phone with apple support. It took over a week to get the shipping tags. Apparently, Apple is selling so many of these awesome laptops that there were none in the continental U.S. to send a replacement to him. His new one came directly from China and to make a very long story even longer, the new machine, fresh from China, crashed out of the box. That day, he called Apple and spent something like 3 hrs on the phone trying to get this issue resolved. They told him after checking his old machine out, this was a software issue. All googling I’ve been doing points to an airport issue and as long as you hook up to the internets via CAT5 cable, it zooms right along. I find that to be very inconvenient, but at least we don’t get the “blue screen” O death. I’m wondering if anyone else has experience these problems. Until next time.

  1. No kernal panics or crashing, but having a devil of a job with airport on my new MBP. I’m going along fine and then suddenly I can’t access the internet. It claims it’s still connected to our network, but the list of computers hooked up to our network doesn’t list my laptop when this happens. Same thing was happening on Windows under Boot Camp on the same machine, until my clever fiance finally found some new drivers that worked beautifully. No dropouts under Window, great speed, everything’s perfect. Unfortunately the same doesn’t go for the ‘net under OSX. It’s very clearly a driver issue. Somebody has found a fix (essentially rolling back) at: http://tinyurl.com/36tubb

I haven’t tried it myself yet. I’m holding out for another few weeks in the hope that Apple will fix the problem. Apart from this problem, which thankfully doesn’t seem to be a hardware issue, my MBP is absolutely beautiful. A great introduction to Macs for me :) I keep annoying my Windows only fiance by running out and babbling at him about how much I love my Mac whenever I discover something else that “just works”. And speaking of babbling… :)
