You down with FTP, yeah you know me!

I have been a PC user since Windows ’95 and recently switched to a Mac about a year ago. Being a graphic designer, I do love my Mac however I was always having issues logging on to FTP sites. For PC users this is as easy as typing the URL and doing a drag & drop on the site’s window. On a Mac this task is a bit lengthy. I have found that it is easiest to go through a free FTP Upload Program. The one I use, which I believe is free is called RBrowser.

Follow these steps to be on your way to uploading onto FTP sites.

  1. Download this file: FTP Download: RBrowser.T.4.3.8.dmg
  2. Open the DMG and click on RBrowser icon then click the FTP Only button.
  3. The Login panel should pop-up.

Type in the website and login information

FTP login

  1. Click Connect button
  2. A window should pop-up with the name of the site that you typed in. Now you are clear to drag&drop the file you want to upload into the ftp site’s window.

  • Yeah, normally I use the Go menu in the finder if I need a graphically menu, otherwise I use the terminal with FTP or curl.
  • I appreciate it! Thanks for stopping by. I look forward to hearing more from you.

Yeah, I knew about Fetch when I got the MacBook, so I downloaded that. I didn't like it at all. A friend recommended Transmit and I never went back. Although I have to admit Jon's Connect to Server technique sure comes in handy a lot.
  • I had a friend who suggested Fetch so I purchased it. Two days later I learned about CyberDuck. I wish I had knew about sooner simply because it's free. But other than that Fetch is a great ftp client as well. I'm a new Macbook user as well and I'll have to say it's an awesome experience in use and aesthetics.

By the way, glad I found your website. I will definitely visit often.
  • Excellent! Thanks Jon (you get the "Mr. Helpful" award for today). I personally like Panic's Transmit for it's folders and what-not, but this is definitely a good helpful alternative. Jon, I truly appreciate all your help here at iBAM. Lord knows we all need it! Don't worry, Colleen, I'll give you the "Ms. Helpful" award for submitting the article - nice job! (Don't you two read anything into it, haha)

  • Also, many FTP sites can be accessed using the Finder's "Go" menu (Cmd + K, Connect to Server..."

Once you log in, site shows up on the desktop just like a removable drive.

And I'd also recommend CyberDuck as a nice (and free) FTP client. Supports Secure FTP as well as plain old vanilla FTP.
